Hana here: before you pick a tour or a bus, look at the calendar, because the mountain often hides. Fuji City, on the Shizuoka side of Mt Fuji, has checked the mountain by eye every day at 8 am since 1990, and over 35 years the whole peak was visible on only 36.7% of days: 61.7% in December, but just 9.9% in July. A day trip from Tokyo is easy (a 2,200 yen bus gets you to Lake Kawaguchi in about 1 hour 45 minutes), so the real decision is when to go and how early. Prices and timetables checked 23 October 2026.
Key points
- In Fuji City's 35 years of 8 am observations (Shizuoka side), the whole of Mt Fuji was visible on 36.7% of days: 61.7% in December but only 9.9% in July.
- Mornings are clearer: the whole mountain was visible on 36.6% of 8 am checks, 23.3% at noon and 22.5% at 4 pm, so arrive early or stay the night.
- On your own, the highway bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko Station costs 2,200 yen one way and takes about 1 hour 45 minutes.

- For Hakone, the 2-day Hakone Freepass from Shinjuku costs 7,100 yen and covers eight kinds of transport; the Romancecar is 1,200 yen extra each way.
- Day trips outside summer do not climb Mt Fuji: the 2026 Yoshida Trail season ran 1 July to 10 September, with a 4,000 yen fee.
Why people still make the trip
Mt Fuji is a 3,776 m free-standing volcano about 100 km southwest of Tokyo, and in June 2013 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here is the detail most visitors miss: it was not listed as a natural site. Its Japanese name on the list is Fujisan – Shinkō no Taishō to Geijutsu no Gensen, roughly “object of worship and source of artistic inspiration”. The 25 listed parts include trails, shrines and the old houses of pilgrim guides, because people have walked up the mountain as a pilgrimage for centuries.

Mikan's note: Wait! Before you pay for a tour, read what happens if Mt Fuji is hidden in cloud or the 5th Station road is closed: check the bad-weather plan and the free-cancellation deadline on the listing, because a cloudy day is not always a reason to cancel.
The “art” half is the part you can tell your friends about. Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that Hokusai’s woodblock prints, such as Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, had a major influence on 19th-century Western art and made the mountain’s shape a symbol of Japan around the world. The cone you have seen on posters is, in a sense, the reason the mountain is on the list.
Tour vs DIY: the four ways to do it in a day
| Option | Time from Shinjuku | Cost (official, per adult) | Without Japanese | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guided day tour (coach or private car) | A full day; see each listing | See listing | Check the guide’s language on the listing | One booking, several viewpoints, no transfers |
| Keio highway bus to Kawaguchiko Station | About 1 h 45 min | 2,200 yen one way (child 1,100) | ◎ easy: booking site in English (and other languages) | Low cost, flexible, early start |
| Fuji Excursion limited express to Kawaguchiko | About 2 h (some services run on set dates only) | Check JR East before you travel | — | Rail fans, rainy days |
| Hakone Freepass (2 days) + Romancecar | Train to Hakone-Yumoto, then the loop | 7,100 yen pass + 1,200 yen each way = 9,500 yen | ◎ easy: official English page | Lake cruise, ropeway, volcanic valley; Fuji views are a bonus |
◎ = you can book and follow it in English. Guided tours are not graded here because we could not open the listings to check the guide language; it is usually stated on each listing.
Tours come in two main types: shared coach tours and private tours with a car and driver. Some return to Tokyo by shinkansen (bullet train). Prices change by date, so compare them on the listing rather than trusting a number in an article.

Yes, more often than in summer. Fuji City (Shizuoka side, at the southern foot) has the longest public record we found. Percentages are the share of 8 am checks, 1991–2025:
| Month | Whole mountain visible | Not visible at all |
|---|---|---|
| January | 60.0% | 17.7% |
| February | 52.6% | 25.1% |
| March | 40.7% | 38.7% |
| April | 36.3% | 41.7% |
| May | 30.2% | 48.8% |
| June | 12.4% | 66.2% |
| July | 9.9% | 75.4% |
| August | 14.6% | 64.4% |
| September | 27.2% | 46.0% |
| October | 41.1% | 31.2% |
| November | 53.9% | 21.3% |
| December | 61.7% | 15.1% |
| Whole year | 36.7% | 41.0% |
The city’s report sums it up: the mountain is seen most from November to February, least from June to August, and spring haze (March to May) and the typhoon season (September) also lower the odds. Summer is not hopeless: in July the mountain was at least partly visible on about a quarter of mornings.
Two things surprise people. First, a sunny sky does not guarantee a view: in July 2025 Fuji City had 19 sunny days but saw the whole mountain on only 5. Second, this is Fuji City’s view. The Lake Kawaguchi side is in another prefecture, and we did not find a similar monthly record for it.
Morning or afternoon? Why the first bus wins
The same 35-year record shows the mountain fading as the day goes on. The whole peak was visible on 36.6% of 8 am checks, 23.3% at noon and 22.5% at 4 pm. The report says it plainly: it tends to get harder to see in the afternoon.
That has two practical uses:
- Going DIY: pick a bus or train that gets you to the lake in the morning. Arriving after lunch puts you in the cloudier part of the day.
- Staying a night: if seeing the mountain is the point of the trip, sleeping by the lake gives you a sunrise and an 8 am window that day-trippers miss. Look at hotels around Lake Kawaguchi or in Hakone and pick a room with a free cancellation date, so you can move it if the forecast turns.
Hakone day trip or overnight?
Hakone is a different kind of trip: Mt Fuji is the backdrop, not the destination. The Hakone Freepass covers eight kinds of transport: the Odakyu line, the Hakone Tozan train, cable car, ropeway, the Hakone sightseeing cruise, and buses on set routes. Bought from Shinjuku, the 2-day pass is 7,100 yen (child 1,600) and the 3-day pass 7,500 yen. The Romancecar express needs its own ticket, 1,200 yen each way to Hakone-Yumoto, and it is 50 yen cheaper when bought online.
One rule makes the overnight option easy: Odakyu’s FAQ says “2 days does not mean 48 hours”. The pass is valid from the day you buy it until the last service the next day. So a day trip and a one-night trip cost the same in transport.
Hakone’s best-known stop is Owakudani, a steaming volcanic valley. Eggs boiled in its hot spring pools turn black, because the porous shells pick up minerals from the water. A local legend says each black egg adds seven years to your life; it is a story tied to a nearby Jizo statue and a lucky number, not a promise.
Can you climb Mt Fuji on a day trip?
Not from October to June. Day tours in those months go to the lakes, viewpoints or the 5th Station, not to the summit. The official climbing site says climbing outside the season is extremely dangerous, and the trails to the top are closed in winter.
In 2026, Yamanashi Prefecture’s rules for the Yoshida Trail were:
- Season: 1 July to 10 September (it can start later because of weather or snow).
- Fee: 4,000 yen per person per climb.
- Cap: 4,000 climbers a day, not counting people with a mountain hut booking.
- Gate: closed from 14:00 to 3:00 the next morning, except for hut guests.
The Shizuoka-side trails have their own rules and fee. The 2027 rules had not been announced when we checked, so do not plan on the 2026 numbers.
The 5th Station in winter
The 5th Station on the Yoshida Trail is open all year, whether or not climbing is allowed. The Yamanashi tourism flyer adds a warning: it is “sometimes inaccessible because of bad weather or when the road surface is icy”. The Fuji Subaru Line toll road leads there, about 40 minutes by car from the Kawaguchiko interchange, or about 60 minutes by local bus from Fujisan Station. In summer (July to September) private cars are restricted and shuttle buses run instead.
If a winter tour lists the 5th Station, read what it does instead on closed days. That is also where Mikan’s note above comes in.
How to choose in one minute
- First trip to Japan, one free day, want no planning: a guided tour. More hands-on ideas for other days are in our guide to cultural experiences in Japan.
- You mainly want to see Fuji: go self-guided on an early bus between October and February, or stay one night by the lake.
- You want a full day out even if clouds win: Hakone, with the lake cruise, ropeway and black eggs.
- Visiting in autumn: the clearer months line up with the leaves and the autumn festivals season. After a long day, a Tokyo food tour in Shinjuku is an easy way to end the day.
