Christmas in Japan is a season of lights, pre-ordered cake and fried chicken, not a holiday. The short answer: 25 December is a normal working day, Christmas Eve is the evening that matters (for couples and for families with small children), and the real days off come a week later at New Year. If you are from the US or the UK, the biggest surprise is the calendar, so this guide starts there, then shows how to order the cake and chicken as a visitor. Checked on 14 October 2026.

Key points
- Christmas is not a public holiday in Japan: Friday 25 December 2026 is a normal working and school day, and the big family break is New Year.
- Japanese families often eat fried chicken at Christmas; KFC Japan takes pre-orders every year (in 2025 from 4 November, for pick-up on 19–25 December).
- The Japanese Christmas cake is a strawberry and whipped-cream sponge that is pre-ordered; Seven-Eleven took 2026 orders from 14 September, with pick-up on 19–25 December.

- Government offices in Japan close from 29 December to 3 January, and many companies take the same break.
- In December Tokyo averages 7.7°C and is mostly dry, while Sapporo averages -0.9°C with snow on about 28 days of the month (JMA normals).

25 December is not in the Cabinet Office’s list of national holidays. The table follows the official US federal and UK (England and Wales) bank holiday lists for this season.

Mikan's note: Before you order a Christmas cake or KFC chicken in Japan, check the order deadline and the allergen list: the order pages are only in Japanese, so ask your hotel front desk to help.
| Date | US | UK | Japan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thu 24 Dec | Working day | Working day | Working day; date night for couples, cake and chicken for families |
| Fri 25 Dec | Federal holiday | Bank holiday | Normal working and school day |
| Mon 28 Dec | Working day | Boxing Day (substitute) | Working day; New Year decorations replace Christmas ones |
| 29–31 Dec | Working days | Working days | Government offices closed; many companies start their break |
| Fri 1 Jan | Holiday | Bank holiday | National holiday |
| Sat 2 – Sun 3 Jan | Weekend | Weekend | Government offices still closed; many firms still on break |
The 29 December to 3 January closure comes from Article 1 of the Act on Holidays of Administrative Organs. Private companies are not bound by it, but many follow a similar break, so New Year, not Christmas, is when trains fill with people going home to family. For what happens in those first days of January, see Japanese New Year and fukubukuro lucky bags.
Why fried chicken, and how the KFC pre-order works
KFC Japan has advertised fried chicken as the Christmas meal for decades, and its “Party Barrel” has been sold since 1985. What it published for 2025:
- Orders opened on 4 November 2025 through KFC Net Order and at participating restaurants.
- Pick-up ran from 19 to 25 December. On 24 and 25 December, KFC pointed customers to off-peak pick-up slots (before 13:00 and after 20:00).
- Price: the Party Barrel cost ¥5,490 including tax, or ¥4,990 when ordered by 12 December.
The 2026 dates and prices had not been published on 14 October 2026. If you would rather skip the chain, supermarkets, department-store food halls and convenience stores (konbini) sell roast chicken legs in the same week.

The Japanese Christmas cake is a strawberry shortcake: light sponge, lightly sweet whipped cream, fresh strawberries and often a sugar Santa on top. People order it weeks ahead. One concrete example, from Seven-Eleven Japan’s official page (checked 14 October 2026):
- Ordering opened on 14 September 2026, in store or in the 7NOW app.
- Deadlines: in store, 16 December for pick-up on 19–23 December, and 19 December for pick-up on 24 or 25 December.
- Pick-up is at the chosen store only, from 19 to 25 December.
- Payment: in-store orders are paid when you collect; 7NOW orders are paid in the app when you order.
- Price: the strawberry “Gâteau Fraise” (size 4, for 2–4 people) is ¥3,780 including tax.
- Allergies: the range includes two cakes made without egg, wheat or milk (a pudding cake and a choux cake, ¥3,996 each). Check the ingredient list when ordering.
Ordering as a visitor: what actually works
- Ask your hotel first. Both the Seven-Eleven page and KFC’s ordering are in Japanese. Show the front desk the product name, the store and the pick-up date, and ask whether they can help you order.
- Pick up on 19–23 December. The order deadline is earlier (16 December at Seven-Eleven), but you avoid the crowds of the 24th and 25th. It is a fresh cream cake, so plan to eat it soon and check the use-by date on the box.
- Pick the store near where you sleep. Collection is only at the store you chose, so a branch near your hotel is easier than one near a sight.
- No order? Buy on the day. Bakeries and department stores sell slices and small cakes, but on 24 December the choice without an order can be thin.
Is it cold, and will it snow?
The Japan Meteorological Agency’s 1991–2020 normals for December:
| Tokyo | Sapporo | |
|---|---|---|
| Average temperature | 7.7°C | -0.9°C |
| Average daily high / low | 12.0°C / 3.8°C | 2.0°C / -4.0°C |
| Days with snow | Under 1 | About 28 |
| Sunshine | 174 hours | 83 hours |
So Tokyo is cold but usually dry and bright, while Sapporo is the place for a white Christmas. Sapporo also holds the Munich Christmas Market in Odori Park 2-chome, listed by the Hokkaido Tourism Organization for 20 November to 25 December 2026, 11:00–21:00. The same organization lists the Sapporo White Illumination on Odori Park (1-chome to 6-chome) for the same dates, with other city-centre sites lit until February or March 2027.
Christmas Eve is for couples
In Japan, the evening of 24 December feels closer to Valentine’s Day than to a family dinner: couples book restaurants weeks ahead, walk under the winter illuminations and swap gifts. Japan has its own twist on gift days, explained in Valentine’s Day and White Day in Japan. Families with children stay home with chicken, cake and presents from サンタさん (Santa-san). Sending a present the other way, from Japan to family abroad? Our guide to Christmas gifts from Japan has Japan Post’s airmail and sea-mail deadlines. Christians are a small minority in Japan; a few churches hold services, but for most people Christmas carries no religious meaning.
Who will be disappointed
If you want Christmas as you know it, with church services everywhere, a long family lunch on the 25th and a quiet Boxing Day, Japan is not the place. Treat it as a bright city festival, plan your rest days around 1 January, and check the Japanese festivals calendar for the rest of the winter. For the days right after, see what is closed and open over the Japanese New Year.
