Hana here – and the honest answer to “which Christmas gifts from Japan will actually arrive on time?” is: light, unbreakable things, sent by airmail before early December. Below are Japanese Christmas gift ideas that ship well, a countdown table built on Japan Post’s own guidance, and what US duty looks like now that de minimis is gone. Checked 19 October 2026.

Key points

  • Japan Post's guide for Christmas delivery abroad is to post by around early December for airmail and around late October for sea mail, and it asks senders to post earlier because year-end volume can cause delays.
  • Japan Post's table as of 15 October 2026 lists airmail, sea mail and EMS to the United States as accepted (SAL is not), and notes that a customs declaration must in principle be registered in advance.
  • CBP has suspended the $800 duty-free de minimis rule for all countries, including mail, so a Christmas gift you buy from a Japanese shop can owe US duty.

  • Light, unbreakable gifts such as furoshiki, a Gunpla kit or a matcha set are the easiest to send from Japan; food has extra US rules.
  • If the deadline has passed, buying the same kind of gift on Amazon.com avoids international shipping and customs.

Gifts with a story you can tell when it is unwrapped

A good gift from Japan comes with a small “did you know”. These four ship well and each has one:

Mikan's note: Wait! Japan Post's early-December guide is for when the parcel leaves Japan, not when you click 'order'. Add the shop's packing days, and check whether US duty is included before you pay.

  • Furoshiki (wrapping cloth). The name goes back to a cloth spread out in the bath (furo) in the Muromachi period, according to Japan’s Ministry of the Environment. In 2005–2006 the ministry promoted a “mottainai furoshiki” made from recycled PET bottles to replace plastic bags. It is the wrapping and the gift at once, and weighs almost nothing.
  • A kitchen knife from Sakai. Sakai City says its forged knives (Sakai uchihamono) were designated a national traditional craft on 5 March 1982, and that forging, sharpening and handle fitting are done by separate specialists. Our Japanese knives guide explains santoku vs gyuto before you choose.
  • An Entry Grade Gunpla kit. Bandai’s Entry Grade RX-78-2 (Light Package) has 67 parts that come off the runners by hand – no nippers, glue, stickers or paint – and costs ¥550 in Japan. A first build for a teenager or an adult fan; see the Gunpla guide.
  • A matcha bowl and bamboo whisk. The tools have no freshness date, unlike the tea itself. How to choose matcha covers grades if you add a tin.

Christmas itself is a different holiday in Japan – fried chicken, a pre-ordered strawberry cake and a normal working day on the 25th – which is a fun card message on its own; read more in Christmas in Japan.

The Christmas countdown from Japan (Japan Post guidance)

Japan Post does not publish a single cut-off date. Its FAQ gives a rough guide for Christmas delivery abroad and asks senders to post early, because year-end volume and tight flight capacity can delay mail even to countries without announced delays. Read the dates below as when the parcel leaves Japan.

When What happens Source
Around late October Japan Post’s guide for Christmas delivery by sea mail Japan Post FAQ
November Order from shops in Japan; leave a few days for packing before the parcel is posted –
Around early December Japan Post’s guide for Christmas delivery by airmail Japan Post FAQ
After that Order locally instead (see the Amazon links on this page) –
25 December Not a public holiday in Japan; shops and post offices work as usual Christmas in Japan
29 December – 3 January Japanese government offices are closed by law, and many companies take the same break e-Gov, Act on Holidays of Administrative Organs

Japan Post adds that parcels containing goods need customs checks at the destination, and must be sent with the customs data entered online in advance; incomplete or inaccurate information can delay the parcel or get it returned. If a friend in Japan is posting your gift, that is the part to get right.

Which services run to the US (as of 15 October 2026)

Service from Japan Status for the United States
EMS (express) Accepted
Airmail (letters, small packets, parcels) Accepted

Japan Post’s table notes for the US that the customs declaration must, in principle, be registered in advance through its dedicated app. The previous version of the table was dated 1 October, so check the latest one before you post.

US duty on a gift from Japan

CBP says the suspension of the $800 de minimis exemption applies “via all modes, including the international postal network”. So a Christmas present you buy from a Japanese shop and have shipped to someone in the US can owe duty and fees, even with a gift message. CBP’s FAQ also says the exemption for genuine (bona fide) gifts remains unchanged, and its June 2026 release puts that at $100 or less – but it covers gifts sent by a person, not purchases. Before you pay, look for a shipping option that says duties are included; our guide to Japanese gifts from Japan lists shops that offer it.

Food is the hardest gift to mail to the US: it needs FDA Prior Notice before it is sent. For snacks, a box already in the US is simpler; see weird Japanese snacks.

If you are past early December, the second column is the realistic one. The shopping links on this page go to a furoshiki set, a Tojiro santoku and a Gunpla search on Amazon.com, and an eBay search for items listed from Japan if you want the “shipped from Japan” feel and the seller’s dates still work.

Who should not order from Japan this year

  • You want it under the tree and it is already mid-December. Buy locally.
  • The gift is mainly snacks for a US address. FDA paperwork, heat and shelf life make a US seller simpler.
  • The item is a spray can, perfume or contains a lithium battery. Forwarding services such as tenso.com list these as items they will not ship.
