Hana here – let’s find a gift that actually arrives. The short answer for US readers: tea, cloth, tableware and stationery travel well from Japan; snacks and anything in a spray can are where orders go wrong; and since the de minimis rule was suspended, the duty question decides which shop to use. Every shop, fee and rule below was checked on 14 October 2026.

Key points
- Shops in Japan that list the US as a destination include Ippodo (tea; it also has a US site that ships from inside the US) and Bento&co in Kyoto (bento boxes, furoshiki, tableware), whose US orders by Japan Post/USPS ship with duties included.
- For a shop that only delivers inside Japan, a forwarding service such as tenso.com receives the parcel in Japan; its handling fee is set by weight, for example 600 yen for a parcel of up to 1 kg, plus international shipping.
- CBP has suspended the $800 duty-free de minimis rule for all countries, including mail, so a gift you buy from a Japanese shop can owe duties and fees.
- A genuine gift worth $100 or less, sent by a person rather than bought from a shop, is still exempt from duty according to CBP.
- Food sent to the US by mail needs FDA Prior Notice, so tea, cloths, tableware and stationery are simpler to order from Japan than snacks.
Which kind of gift travels well from Japan?
Pick the gift by how easily it crosses the border, not only by taste. This is the order we would think in:

Mikan's note: Wait! Since de minimis ended, a gift you buy from a Japanese shop is a purchase, not a gift, so duty can be due. Pick a shipping option that says duties are included, or ask the shop who pays before you order.
| Gift | Why it is easy (or not) to send to the US | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|
| Furoshiki or tenugui (cotton cloths) | Light, does not break, no food or cosmetics rules | – |
| Stationery: pens, notebooks, washi tape | Light and cheap to ship | – |
| Tableware: small cups, bowls, chopsticks | Breakable, so choose a shop that packs for export | – |
| Matcha and loose tea | A food, so FDA Prior Notice applies when mailed; easier via a maker’s US site | How to choose matcha |
| Sunscreen and skincare | In the US sunscreen is regulated as a drug, so personal imports can be held | Japanese vs Korean sunscreen |
| Snacks and wagashi | Food rules plus heat and shelf life; many forwarders refuse perishables | Snack subscription boxes compared |
If you do not know the person’s taste, a cloth or a tin of tea is the safe end of this table. Thinking of a towel instead? Here is how to check that an Imabari towel is certified before you order. For someone who cooks, a small cup or a pair of chopsticks lasts for years.
Shops in Japan that ship to the US (checked 14 October 2026)
These are shops whose own pages list the US as a destination. We have not ordered from them; the details are what each shop publishes.
- Ippodo (Kyoto, tea). The global online shop lists the U.S.A. among its destinations (list updated 1 October 2026). Ippodo also runs a separate US & Canada site that ships from inside the US, so for matcha or sencha gifts the US site avoids both customs and the FDA paperwork. If you order from the global shop instead, Ippodo says the recipient pays any duties and fees, and DHL or the post office contacts them directly to collect.
- Bento&co (Kyoto, bento boxes, furoshiki, tenugui, tableware, chopsticks). Its shipping policy says US orders sent by Japan Post/USPS ship with duties included, while some courier options ship without duties and the carrier bills you. Bento&co says the name of each shipping method shows whether duties are included. Japan Post parcels typically take 10–30 business days, so order well before birthdays and the holidays.
For ready-made snack gifts, see our comparison of Japanese snack subscription boxes; those boxes ship from Japan and are billed as subscriptions, so cancel after the first box if you only want one.

A forwarding service gives you an address in Japan. You order from the Japanese shop as if you lived there, and the service sends the parcel on. tenso.com lists the United States among its delivery countries. What it charges, per its usage-fee page:
| Parcel weight | tenso.com handling fee |
|---|---|
| up to 100 g | 100 yen |
| up to 500 g | 530 yen |
| up to 1 kg | 600 yen |
| up to 2 kg | 1,020 yen |
International shipping comes on top and depends on the method (EMS, air, SAL or surface). Combining several parcels costs a 200-yen application fee plus 300 yen for each added parcel. As a rough example, a 1 kg box of tableware costs the item price + Japanese domestic shipping to the forwarder + 600 yen + international postage + any US duty.
Check the prohibited list before you buy. tenso.com will not ship perfume, nail polish, spray cans, hair dye, lithium batteries, perishable food, or swords (real or fake), and items that arrive at its warehouse but cannot be shipped have to be thrown away, sent within Japan or returned to the shop.
Import tax and customs for US recipients
Bought from a shop: US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) says the duty-free de minimis treatment for goods worth $800 or less is suspended for all countries and all modes, including international mail, and that “all applicable duties, taxes, fees, exactions, and charges must be paid” on these shipments (CBP e-commerce FAQ, last modified 2 September 2026). The rate depends on the product’s tariff classification.
Sent as a genuine gift: CBP’s June 2026 release says genuine gifts valued at $100 or less remain exempt. CBP’s FAQ adds that something acquired by purchase is not a gift. In practice: a friend in Japan posting you a tenugui they own counts; a shop shipping an order you paid for does not, even with a gift message.
Food: the FDA requires Prior Notice for food shipped to the US by mail before it is sent, and a parcel without it can be refused. Ask the shop whether it files Prior Notice for US orders, or buy food gifts from a US site.
Outside the US, rules differ. In the EU, VAT applies to every parcel from Japan and a flat €3 duty per item type has applied to parcels of €150 or less since 1 July 2026 (Swedish Customs, applying the EU rule).
Wrapping, the Japanese way
In Japan the wrapping is part of the gift, and a small, good thing wrapped neatly usually means more than a large one. Many Japanese shops wrap for a fee. A furoshiki solves the problem twice: it is the wrapping and something the person keeps.
When ordering from Japan is not worth it
- You need it within two weeks. Japan Post parcels can take 10–30 business days. Buy in the US.
- The gift is snacks for a party. Food rules, heat and shelf life make a US Asian grocery or a US-based shop simpler.
- The item is a brand also sold in the US. For sunscreen in particular, the US version is the one FDA allows; see our sunscreen guide.
Your next step
- Choose from the easy end of the table: cloth, stationery, tableware or tea.
- Check whether the shop ships to the US and whether the shipping method says “duties included”.
- If it does not ship abroad, open a forwarding account, check the prohibited list, and add the handling fee and postage to the price.

Checked 14 October 2026 on the CBP, FDA, Ippodo, Bento&co and tenso.com pages. Fees and customs rules change, so read the shop’s shipping page before you pay.
