Cut a small square from a towel, float it on water, and count: if it has not started to sink within 5 seconds, it cannot be sold as an Imabari towel. Hana here, on the towels from one small city in Ehime. The short version: “Imabari” is not a style or a softness level but a certification with 12 lab tests behind it, you can look a towel up in the makers’ own database, and buying one from the US now means thinking about duty. Everything below was checked on 22 October 2026.

Key points

  • An Imabari towel is one that passed the Imabari Towel Industry Association's own quality standard; only member companies may use the name, and the absorbency test requires a sample to start sinking in water within 5 seconds, both unwashed and after 3 washes.
  • The standard's table lists 12 tests, from absorbency and lint shedding to colourfastness, the strength of the stitched edge and free formaldehyde.
  • To check a towel sold online, look for the certification number and the maker's name on the listing and compare them in the association's certified-product search, which listed more than 17,000 products on 22 October 2026.

  • The official online store does not ship abroad directly: overseas buyers order through WorldShopping, which adds 10% of the product price plus Japanese domestic shipping, then bills international shipping separately, and orders cannot be cancelled or returned.
  • In the US the $800 duty-free de minimis rule has been suspended for all countries since 29 August 2025, so towels you buy from Japan can owe duty; in the UK, goods of £135 or less pay VAT but no customs duty.

Why a towel from Imabari is worth looking for

Imabari, on the northern coast of Shikoku, has been making towels for about 130 years, according to the official brand site. What makes it unusual is that the whole chain sits in one place: close to 200 factories for twisting yarn, dyeing it and weaving it. The 68 member companies of the Imabari Towel Industry Association produced 6,535 tonnes of towels in 2025.

Mikan's note: Wait! The official Imabari store can't cancel or return an order placed through WorldShopping, and US buyers now owe duty on towels they buy. Check the size, colour and total cost before you pay.

Two local details explain the feel the brand talks about:

  • The water. The brand site credits groundwater from the Sojagawa River, soft water with very few impurities, for keeping the cotton soft and the colours bright.
  • Dyeing before weaving. Imabari makers bleach and dye the yarn first and weave it afterwards, a technique the brand calls distinctive to Imabari.

The brand itself is younger than the towels. The association says that in 2006, when the area was struggling against a sharp rise in imported towels, it started the Imabari Towel Project with the designer Kashiwa Sato as branding producer. He created the red, blue and white logo (red for energy and passion, blue for quality, trust and tradition, white for kindness and purity) and put a plain white towel at the centre of the brand. The name “Imabari Towel” was registered as a regional collective trademark on 6 July 2007.

The 5-second test, and the 11 others

Here is the detail worth repeating at dinner: the absorbency test is not run once. The association’s standard says a sample must start to sink within 5 seconds both unwashed and after 3 washes. That test is one row in a table of 12:

What is tested Pass mark in the official standard
Absorbency (sinking method) Starts to sink within 5 seconds, unwashed and after 3 washes
Lint shedding after washing 0.2% or less
Pile retention (how firmly the loops hold) Minimum force per loop set by towel type
Colourfastness to light, washing, sweat and rubbing Grade 4 or higher in most tests (lower grades allowed for pale colours, sweat staining and wet rubbing)
Tensile and bursting strength Warp 147 N, weft 196 N; bursting 392.3 kPa
Shrinkage in a home washing machine Within ±7%
Strength of the stitched (merrow) edge Warp 20 N, weft 30 N
Free formaldehyde Absorbance difference of 0.03 or less

The notes to the table add exceptions: microfibre is tested by a drip method instead, handkerchiefs and gauze-backed towels use a different strength test, and gauze weaves and stretch fabrics are exempt from the shrinkage rule.

What the mark does not tell you: how thick, heavy or soft a towel is, or how fast it dries. Those differ from maker to maker, so read the size and weight on the listing. If you want a very specific feel, a certified towel from a maker you do not know is still a guess.

How to check a towel before you buy

Only member companies may use the name, and the association says that also covers look-alike wording such as “towel of Imabari” (今治のタオル) or “Imabari-made towel” (今治製タオル). Certified products get the association’s woven label, one per towel, and members use a version that carries their company number.

Online, you cannot touch the label, so do this instead:

  1. Find the certification number on the listing. The association’s search shows these as a year and a number, such as 2026-2272.
  2. Note the maker’s name.
  3. Open the association’s certified-product search. It is in Japanese only (your browser’s translate button works), and on 22 October 2026 it listed more than 17,000 products. You can filter by company, category (bath towel, face towel, handkerchief and so on), certification date and size; the results show each product’s certification number and maker.

There is no box to type the number straight in, so search by the maker and look for the number in the results. If nothing matches, ask the seller, or contact the association directly (phone +81-898-32-7000).

Getting one to the US or UK

Route What to expect Good for
Amazon.com Certified sets listed by several sellers; check the number and maker A familiar checkout; check who the seller is and the delivery time
eBay.com Listings from sellers in Japan; check the ship-from country and postage Comparing several sellers at once
Official store via WorldShopping 10% fee on product price plus Japanese domestic shipping, then a second bill for international shipping and handling; no cancellations or returns; store support in Japanese only The full official range

The official online store does not ship overseas itself. If you open it from abroad, a WorldShopping cart appears on items that can be bought from your country, and WorldShopping buys and forwards them for you.

US duty. CBP suspended the $800 duty-free de minimis rule for all countries from 29 August 2025, and its FAQ (last modified 2 September 2026) says the suspension covers all modes, including international mail. A genuine gift of $100 or less, sent by a person, remains exempt according to CBP’s June 2026 release, but CBP’s FAQ says an item acquired by purchase is not a bona fide gift. Our guide to ordering Japanese gifts to the US explains which shops include duties at checkout.

UK VAT. GOV.UK says VAT is charged on all goods sent from abroad except gifts worth £39 or less, and customs duty applies only above £135. The carrier bills you and holds the parcel for about 3 weeks before returning it. If a friend in Japan is posting towels to you instead, the rules for mail from Japan are in our souvenirs you can order online guide.

Your next step

  1. Decide on the size first: bath, face or hand towel.
  2. Pick a listing that shows a certification number, and check it against the association’s search.
  3. US buyer? Add likely duty to the price, or pick a seller that ships from inside the US.

A towel is the safe gift for someone whose taste you do not know – but what goes well with it in the same parcel, and what will customs stop? Our guide to Christmas gifts from Japan has the posting deadlines and ideas.
