Hana here: sagaribana is a flower you have to stay up for. Its pink and white powder-puff blossoms open after sunset, scent the air like vanilla, and fall by dawn – on Iriomote they end up floating down the river in the morning. It grows wild in Japan only from Amami Oshima southwards, and it blooms for just a few weeks in early summer. Below is where to see sagaribana on Iriomote, Ishigaki, Miyakojima, Okinawa’s main island and Amami, which months to aim for, and which tours run (all checked on 27 October 2026).

Key points
- Sagaribana (Barringtonia racemosa, also called the powder-puff tree) opens its flowers after sunset and drops them at dawn, so you see it either at night or floating on the river early in the morning.
- In Japan it grows wild from Amami Oshima southwards, along rivers and in the freshwater wetlands behind mangroves.
- The season is early summer: Hoshino Resorts ran its Iriomote sagaribana cruise from 13 June to 25 July 2026, and Miyakojima's 2025 light-up ran from 25 June to 4 July.
- On Ishigaki, the sagaribana colonies on the Hirakubo peninsula became part of Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park in 2016; a 2-hour guided night tour with English and Japanese guides is sold on GetYourGuide.
- Dates for summer 2027 have not been announced yet (checked 27 October 2026), so plan around late June to July and confirm in spring.
This news clip from QAB shows the evening light-up on Miyakojima, with the flowers hanging in chains from the trees:

What is sagaribana in English?
Sagari means “hanging” and bana means “flower”: the blossoms dangle from the branches in long chains. The tree is Barringtonia racemosa, usually called the powder-puff tree in English, and one Ishigaki tour company calls it the “powder puff mangrove”. Each flower looks like a fluffy ball of fine threads, pale pink or white.

Mikan's note: Sagaribana trips are cancelled for bad weather, the tide or too few flowers, so leave a spare morning or evening in your plan. Bring insect repellent and shoes that can get wet or muddy.
According to Hoshino Resorts’ 2026 release, the tree is found in the tropics and subtropics of Southeast Asia, and in Japan it grows wild only from Amami Oshima southwards. It likes fresh water: river banks and the wetlands on the inland side of mangrove forests. That’s why the best places to see it are rivers you reach by canoe.
Here’s the part people like to retell: the whole show is over in one night. Okinawa’s RBC news describes it as starting to bloom after sunset, giving off a sweet scent, and falling as day breaks. That’s why it’s also called a maboroshi no hana, a “phantom flower”, or a one-night flower.
When does sagaribana bloom?
Early summer. No town publishes an official “best week”, so the most reliable guide is when the tours and light-ups actually run:
| Where | What ran | Dates | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iriomote | Hoshino Resorts sagaribana cruise | 13 June – 25 July 2026 (only on days the tide allows) | Hoshino Resorts press release |
| Miyakojima | Evening light-up on a walking path | 25 June – 4 July 2025, 7:30–9:30 pm | QAB news |
| Ishigaki | Guided night tour (GetYourGuide) | Listing says the flower blooms “July to August” | GetYourGuide listing |
| Okinawa main island | Uruma riverside, Taira in Nago | In bloom on 3 July 2023 and starting on 5 July 2022 | RBC news |
So for a 2027 trip, late June to mid-July is the safest window, with June and late July possible on some islands. The 2027 tour and light-up dates are not announced yet: check again in spring before you book flights.
As for the time of night: the flowers open in the evening and are at their best in the dark, and they drop around dawn. You can see them two ways – hanging and lit up in the evening (Miyakojima, Ishigaki night tours), or at first light, when the river is covered in fallen blossoms (Iriomote).

Iriomote: the river at sunrise
Iriomote is one of the best-known places to see sagaribana by boat or canoe: the island is cut by rivers lined with mangroves, and much of it lies inside Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park. The trips go out around first light, when the night’s flowers are falling onto the water.
One concrete example: Hoshino Resorts Iriomote Hotel’s “Zekkei Sagaribana Cruise” in 2026 ran from 13 June to 25 July, from 5:20 to 8 am, at ¥9,700 per person (tax included) with a drink and sandwiches. It took up to six people (minimum two), was for hotel guests only, and had to be booked on the hotel’s site by 6 pm the day before. Dates were limited by the tide, and trips could be cancelled for weather, tide or how many flowers were open. If you’re not staying there, other operators on the island run canoe and SUP trips in the season; GetYourGuide also lists Iriomote mangrove canoe and SUP tours that aren’t tied to the flower.
Ishigaki: the Hirakubo colonies
On Ishigaki, the protected sagaribana colonies are in the far north, on the Hirakubo peninsula. Japan’s Ministry of the Environment added the sagaribana colonies there to Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park in April 2016, so this is protected ground, not a roadside garden.
For visitors, the easiest way to see sagaribana on Ishigaki is a guided night tour (the listing doesn’t name the exact spot). The one sold on GetYourGuide, run by Ishigaki Adventure PiPi, lasts 2 hours, lists English and Japanese guides, is for ages 3 to 65, and can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead. The listing says the flowers bloom from July to August. Its price wasn’t shown when we checked in October (out of season), so look again when the 2027 dates open.
Miyakojima: the light-up
Miyakojima is the place to go if you’d rather not get up before dawn. According to QAB news, a local environmental group lights up a sagaribana colony on a walking path in Nishinakasone, Hirara every year in the blooming season. In 2025 it ran from 25 June to 4 July, 7:30 to 9:30 pm, and families and tourists came from about 8 pm. The 2027 dates have not been announced yet.
Okinawa main island and Amami
You don’t have to fly to the outer islands. RBC news has reported sagaribana in bloom along a river in Uruma and in Taira, Nago, both in early July. Further north, Kyodo News reported around 200 trees flowering on Yoro Island in the Amami islands (Setouchi Town, Kagoshima) in July 2021.
This RBC clip shows the Uruma riverside at night:

Can you go on your own? Safety and protecting the trees
Miyakojima’s light-up is held on a walking path, and QAB showed families and tourists visiting in the evening. For the rivers of Iriomote and the colonies of Hirakubo, go with a guide:
- It’s dark and tidal. Iriomote trips are planned around the tide, and the light is low until sunrise. Guides know where the channels are and when the water is too low.
- It’s a national park. The Hirakubo colonies are inside Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park. The Ishigaki tour listing asks visitors to follow the guide’s instructions because the environment is delicate.
- Leave the flowers. Don’t pull branches down for photos or step off the path onto the roots; take pictures of the fallen flowers rather than picking the ones still hanging.
Planning a sagaribana trip for summer 2027
- Pick late June to mid-July. That’s the overlap of every tour and light-up above.
- Stay two or three nights. Weather, tide and the number of open flowers can all cancel a trip, so give yourself a spare morning or evening.
- Decide between night and dawn. Evening: Miyakojima’s light-up or an Ishigaki night tour. Dawn: an Iriomote river trip. Splitting your stay between Ishigaki and Iriomote lets you try both.
- Check in spring. The 2027 dates were not announced when we checked on 27 October 2026.
