In October 2026, Pokémon Center MEGA TOKYO sold one card pack only after a face-recognition check – one purchase per person per day. Hana here: Pokémon was born in Japan, and Japan is still the one place where you can walk into a Pokémon Center in almost every big city. This guide tells you where the stores are, why a new Japanese card set can be hard to buy even inside the store, how the Pokémon Cafe booking really works, and how to spot fake cards. Checked against official sites on 20 October 2026.

Key points

  • Japan has 21 official Pokémon Center and Pokémon Cafe locations; Tokyo has the most, including Pokémon Center MEGA TOKYO in Ikebukuro, open daily 10 am–8 pm.
  • New Japanese card sets are often sold at Pokémon Center stores by a pre-release lottery: for the 16 September 2026 release, Pokémon Center Kyoto took one entry per person through a LINE mini app and had no general sale during the lottery period.
  • A regular Japanese booster pack costs ¥200 including tax for 5 cards (Storm Emerald, July 2026); the 30th CELEBRATION pack costs ¥360 for 6 holo cards.

  • Pokémon Cafe bookings open a month at a time, online only: November 2026 dates opened on 1 October at 6 pm, and each visit lasts 90 minutes.
  • Pokémon Center Online ships only to addresses in Japan, so from abroad you need a seller who ships internationally.

Thirty years of Pokémon, and it started here

According to The Pokémon Company’s own history, Pokémon Red and Green came out on the Game Boy in Japan in February 1996, and the trading card game followed in October 1996, which is why Japanese card sets carry “30th” branding in 2026. The first Pokémon Center opened in Tokyo in April 1998, and the first Pokémon Cafe arrived with Pokémon Center Tokyo DX in March 2018.

Mikan's note: Is a new card set coming out during your trip? Check the store's news page about ten days before: the lottery needs LINE on your phone, and you must be in Japan for your pickup slot.

Japan is also where cards appear in their own Japanese sets. A regular Japanese MEGA expansion pack is small: 5 cards for ¥200 including tax (Storm Emerald, released 31 July 2026). The anniversary pack 30th CELEBRATION (16 September 2026) is ¥360 for 6 holo cards. Collectors abroad like Japanese cards for their print quality and earlier release, but the low shelf price only helps if you can actually find a pack.

Pokémon is in the streets too. Painted manhole covers called Poké Lids (“Pokéfuta”) have spread across the country: Sapporo City says more than 370 had been installed nationwide as of July 2025, and each one becomes a PokéStop in Pokémon GO. The official map is on local.pokemon.jp.

Pokémon Center stores in Japan: where to go

The official shop list shows 21 Pokémon Center and Pokémon Cafe locations, plus five smaller “Pokémon Store” shops (Tokyo Station and Narita Airport among them). Each store has different stock and some store-only goods, and the online store cannot show what a shop has.

Japanese Pokémon cards: why new sets sell by lottery

On release days the shelves are often not the way in. For the card products released on 16 September 2026, Pokémon Center Kyoto ran a pre-release lottery:

  1. Entry through a LINE mini app form (you need LINE and a smartphone), from 7 September 4 pm to 11 September 11:59 pm.
  2. One entry per person; entering at several stores was discouraged, because only one win counts.
  3. Only winners were notified, from 14 September at noon.
  4. Winners collected and paid in a 30-minute time slot between 16 and 20 September, with a limit of 10 30th CELEBRATION packs per person.
  5. The store said there was no general sale during the lottery period.

So if a big release falls in your trip, look at the news page of the store you will visit about ten days before. The notice is in Japanese, so use a translation app. Pokémon Center Online runs its own lotteries, but they need a free member account (some also need phone verification), the product pages say delivery is only to addresses in Japan, and a winner who does not order by the deadline loses the win.

Restocks can come with their own rules. From 1 to 15 October 2026, Pokémon Center MEGA TOKYO sold the re-released MEGA Dream ex high-class pack with a face-recognition check: one purchase per person per day, everyone from primary-school age is checked, masks, hats and sunglasses come off at the scanner, and if you do not consent you cannot buy the item.

Fake cards and “searched” packs

The Pokémon Card Game’s official site has warned about unauthorized goods sold as “replica” or “metal cards” (September 2023), and about fakes on flea-market apps. The same notice warns about “searched” packs and boxes, where someone has removed the packs with the rare cards and sells the rest, and about home-made “original packs” (oripa) whose odds may not be what they claim. Its advice: compare with the official retail price and the contents before you buy. Buy sealed product from official stores or well-rated sellers, and treat bargain boxes with suspicion.

  1. Watch the release date. Dates open a month at a time and are announced on the café’s NEWS page: October 2026 dates opened on 1 September at 6 pm, November dates on 1 October at 6 pm (as listed on the site). December dates were “to be announced” on 20 October 2026.
  2. Book online. Reservations go through the official reservation site; the phone is only for last-minute cancellations. Count every guest, babies included; groups of 7 or more make several bookings.
  3. Arrive on time. Your stay is 90 minutes from the booked time, and if you have not checked in 10 minutes after the start, the booking is cancelled automatically.
  4. Order. Everyone aged 6 and over orders at least one item. Free cancellation online until 10 pm the day before.

No booking? You can still enter the café’s goods shop without a reservation (up to 3 of each item per person), and a table is only possible after a last-minute cancellation.

Tax-free shopping changes on 1 November 2026

From 1 November 2026, Japan’s tax-free system becomes a refund at departure: you pay the full price in the shop, then have customs confirm the goods at the airport before you check in your bags, within 90 days of purchase, and the consumption tax is refunded. The minimum is ¥5,000 (before tax) per shop per day (Japan National Tourism Organization). Nihombashi Takashimaya S.C.’s official list shows that Pokémon Center TOKYO DX handles tax-free in the store itself. The other Pokémon Center pages do not say, so ask at the till and bring your passport. Keep tax-free purchases in your hand luggage until customs has seen them.

Buying Japanese Pokémon goods from home

Because Pokémon Center Online does not ship abroad, overseas fans usually buy Japanese cards and store exclusives from sellers who ship from Japan. Check the seller’s location, ratings and whether the pack or box is factory-sealed, and expect import VAT or duty on arrival. For a related hobby, our Gunpla guide covers model kits and THE GUNDAM BASE, and if you want gifts that ship straight to your door, see Japanese gifts you can order online.
